Google asks for a number to create an account, for two-step verification, and for recovery. Here is what a rented line does, and the one mistake to avoid.
A separate work account
A Google account for a business, verified with its own number, not mixed in with the account that holds your family photos.
Two-step verification codes
Google's SMS arrive in ELK Connect, readable from any device you are signed in to.
A number that does not move
Rented by the month and renewed as long as you like: Google does not like numbers that change every fortnight.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Google accept virtual numbers?
- For receiving SMS, often. Google does run one of the strictest filters at account CREATION and regularly refuses numbers not tied to a SIM card. We would rather say so before you buy.
- Can I use this as my recovery number?
- Technically yes, and it is a bad idea if you might stop the line. A recovery number that is no longer yours is an account you do not reopen. A backup email address is safer.
- What about an existing Gmail account?
- You can add the line as a trusted number in Google's security settings. Remove it before you give the number back.
Worth knowing
Google refuses a good share of virtual numbers at account creation. It is one of the platforms where we recommend this use the least.
