Land connected, not looking for a shop
The worst moment to sort out your phone is on arrival: unfamiliar network, closed shop, waiting taxi, and a roaming bill already running. All of it can be set up before you leave, in ten minutes, from home — with nothing to collect when you get there.
What is hard today
The bill you find out about afterwards
Roaming is charged per megabyte, with no visible ceiling, and the total arrives a month later. It is the only purchase of the trip whose price you do not know while making it.
A local SIM, in practice
A queue, a passport, a form, sometimes a deposit. And once the card is in, your usual number receives nothing — so no more verification codes from your bank.
The first fifteen minutes
With no data there is no map, no ride, no message to whoever is waiting for you. It is exactly the moment you need it most and have it least.
What we do about it
The eSIM installs before you leave
You buy the plan for your destination and scan the code at home, on a stable connection. It only starts at your first connection over there: buying a week early consumes nothing.
Your usual number stays active
The eSIM takes a second line. You turn off data on your main line to avoid roaming and keep receiving your calls and your bank codes by text.
A local number if the stay runs long
For an assignment of several weeks, a virtual number in that country lets people call you at a local rate — useful when a client, a landlord or an administration has to be able to reach you.
Call without a plan
A call to a landline or a mobile anywhere, billed by the minute from the same balance. The person you call receives an ordinary phone call: no app to install, no internet to find.
The services involved
Questions we are asked
Should I buy before leaving, or can I do it there?
Both work, but before is markedly easier: installing the profile needs a connection, and on arrival that is precisely what you do not have yet. Buying early consumes nothing, since the plan starts at your first connection there.
Do I lose WhatsApp or my messages?
No. WhatsApp stays attached to your usual number, which keeps working on its own line. You only change which line the data goes through.
What if my phone does not support eSIM?
Check before buying, in your phone settings under mobile plans. If the option is not there, an eSIM is not possible on that device — international calling over wifi still is.
I am visiting several countries on one trip.
Take a plan per country, or a regional plan where one is available for that area. What is genuinely available is shown in the app — never a brochure list.
