What is an OTP code and why you need one

An OTP (One-Time Password) is a temporary password, usually made up of 4 to 6 digits, sent by SMS to verify your identity when creating or accessing an account. WhatsApp, Meta (Facebook, Instagram), TikTok, Telegram and most messaging apps use this system to confirm that the phone number actually belongs to you.

This mechanism has replaced email verification in many cases because it's faster and considered more secure: the code expires after a few minutes and can only be used once. Without this code, no one can access your account, even if they know your password.

How OTP codes work with a virtual number

When you sign up for a service with a virtual number provided by ELK Connect, the process is identical to using a regular number:

  1. You enter your virtual number during registration
  2. The app (WhatsApp, TikTok, etc.) sends an SMS containing the OTP code
  3. The SMS arrives in your inbox linked to the virtual number
  4. You copy the code and paste it into the app
  5. Your account is verified

The main difference: instead of receiving the SMS on a physical SIM card, you receive it through your ELK Connect account interface or directly in the app if it's integrated.

Some services, particularly banks, deliberately refuse virtual numbers for regulatory compliance reasons. Before signing up with a virtual number, verify that the service accepts it. OTP codes only work if the service allows your type of number.

Apps that accept virtual numbers

Most major communication and social media apps accept virtual numbers for OTP verification. Here are the most common ones:

  • WhatsApp: accepts virtual numbers for initial verification
  • Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger): verifies via SMS on virtual numbers
  • TikTok: sends OTP code without particular restrictions
  • Telegram: works with virtual numbers
  • Viber: accepts virtual numbers
  • Snapchat: compatible with virtual numbers
  • Discord: verifies via SMS on virtual numbers
  • Twitch: accepts virtual numbers for verification
Never share your OTP code with anyone, even if someone claims to be from the service's support team. Official teams will never ask you for it via SMS or direct message.

Real limitations of virtual numbers for OTP

Although most apps accept virtual numbers, some restrictions exist:

Banking and financial services

Banks, PayPal, Wise and payment apps often limit virtual numbers. Depending on your institution, OTP codes may be refused or accepted. Check directly with your bank before attempting to sign up.

Government applications

Public services (taxes, driver's license, official documents) generally refuse virtual numbers for identity verification reasons.

Geographic restrictions

Some apps verify that the number matches your declared location. If you're travelling and using a number from another country, the service may reject the OTP code.

Delivery delay

In rare cases, the SMS may take a few seconds to arrive, especially if the network is congested. The code usually expires after 10 to 15 minutes, giving you plenty of time.

What to do if you don't receive your OTP code

Immediate checks

  • Make sure your ELK Connect balance is sufficient to receive an SMS
  • Verify that the virtual number is activated and linked to your account
  • Wait an additional 30 seconds (some SMS are slightly delayed)
  • Check your spam or promotions folder if you're using an email interface

If the problem persists

  • Request a new OTP code (most apps offer "Resend code")
  • Check with the service if virtual numbers are accepted in your region
  • Contact ELK Connect support with your virtual number and the time of the attempt
Some services limit the number of OTP verification attempts. If you fail several times, wait 24 hours before trying again.

Security: best practices with OTP codes

Never do this

  • โŒ Share your OTP code by message or call
  • โŒ Use the same virtual number for multiple critical accounts
  • โŒ Leave your virtual number inactive if you no longer use it (codes remain temporary)
  • โŒ Take a screenshot of the code and store it in the cloud

Best practices

  • โœ“ Enable two-step verification (2FA) if the service offers it
  • โœ“ Keep your ELK Connect balance active to receive recovery codes
  • โœ“ Note your virtual numbers in a secure password manager
  • โœ“ Delete SMS once the account is verified

Special cases: repeated verification and account recovery

Some services ask you to verify your number again after a password change or login attempt from a new device. Your ELK Connect virtual number will continue to receive these codes as long as you keep the number active and topped up.

If you lose access to your virtual number, you may not be able to recover your account. Keep a record of your important virtual numbers.

Remember: ELK Connect virtual numbers receive OTP codes from WhatsApp, TikTok, Meta and most mainstream apps without any issues. Restrictions mainly concern banking services (check with your bank) and some government apps. Keep your virtual number active and topped up, and never share your OTP code with anyone.
