What is eSIM?

eSIM (embedded SIM) is a fully digital SIM card built directly into your phone's hardware. Instead of a physical SIM card you insert into a reader, eSIM exists as a downloadable electronic profile. Your device securely stores the operator's data—your number, plan, and network authentication—on a dedicated chip.

This technology isn't new: it's been in smartwatches and tablets for years. But mainstream smartphone adoption accelerated from 2022 onwards, when makers like Apple, Samsung, and Google began releasing eSIM-only or hybrid (eSIM + physical SIM) phones.

How eSIM Works

Activation: No Waiting for Post

Instead of waiting for a SIM card to arrive by mail, you receive a QR code or activation link. You scan the QR code from your phone's settings, and within seconds the eSIM profile downloads and configures itself. No physical material involved.

ELK Connect, for example, sends the activation code via email or SMS. You open the link, confirm activation, and your eSIM is ready in minutes.

Storage and Switching

Your phone can store multiple eSIM profiles at once, but use only one at a time (unless your device supports dual eSIM, which is still rare). You can switch between profiles directly from settings—no restart needed. This is especially useful if you have a work and personal profile, or a local profile for every country you visit.

Built-in Security

eSIM uses the same encryption as a physical SIM card. Data is stored in a secure area of the chip, inaccessible even to the phone maker. Your network credentials and authentication data are as protected as on a traditional SIM card.

Benefits of eSIM for Travellers

No Need to Buy a Card in Every Country

The main advantage: you don't need to find a local telecom shop on every arrival. You download an eSIM plan for that country directly from your phone, anywhere, anytime.

If you're travelling to Switzerland, Germany, or France, ELK Connect offers eSIM plans for these destinations. You activate the profile before you leave, and you're connected right after landing.

Switch Networks Instantly

You can switch between multiple operators without waiting. If a plan doesn't suit you or the signal is weak, move to another profile in seconds. No delays, no activation wait.

Multiple Numbers on One Phone

Need a local number for work and another for personal use? With eSIM, it's possible. Store multiple profiles and switch between them based on context. For businesses, this is a productivity gain: one device, multiple business identities.

Savings on International Plans

eSIM plans are often cheaper than traditional roaming plans offered by your regular operator. You pay for actual connectivity in the country, not international surcharges.

Real-World Use Cases

You're going to South Africa for a week. Before you leave, you activate an ELK Connect eSIM plan for South Africa. On arrival, you instantly have a local number and data access. You receive confirmation SMS from your banks, can call local friends, and pay local rates instead of international roaming.
You manage clients in France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. You activate three eSIM profiles: one French number, one British, one Canadian. Depending on the calls you receive, you switch to the appropriate profile. Your clients see a local number, not an international one.

Limitations and Things to Check

Device Compatibility

eSIM is only available on recent phones. iPhone 14 and newer support it natively. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer too. If your phone is older than 5 years, it probably doesn't support eSIM.

Some Banks Reject Virtual Numbers

For SMS verification (2FA, OTP), some financial institutions deliberately reject eSIM or virtual numbers. Check your bank's terms before activating an eSIM for sensitive operations. If your bank requires a number tied to a physical SIM card, eSIM won't be enough.

Transfer Between Devices

Unlike a physical SIM card, you can't remove an eSIM and put it in another phone. If you change devices, you'll need to reactivate your eSIM profile on the new phone. ELK Connect handles this process, but it's an extra step.

Internet Dependency for Activation

You need Wi-Fi or other connectivity to initially download an eSIM profile. If you're completely disconnected, you can't activate an eSIM.

How to Activate eSIM with ELK Connect

  1. Check compatibility: Make sure your phone supports eSIM
  2. Choose your destination: Select a country or region (AT, CA, CH, DE, FR, GB, JP, US, ZA)
  3. Get the QR code: ELK Connect sends you a link or QR code by email
  4. Scan or open the link: From your phone's network settings
  5. Confirm activation: Accept terms and wait a few seconds
  6. Switch to the profile: Select the new eSIM as your active operator
  7. Test connectivity: Send an SMS or start an internet search to verify

Global mobile operators are gradually adopting eSIM as the standard. The European Union has enacted rules requiring operators to offer eSIM plans at no extra cost. Apple removed the physical SIM card reader from the iPhone 15 in the United States, accelerating the transition.

In the coming years, eSIM will likely become the standard, and physical SIM cards will gradually disappear. Travellers and mobile professionals will benefit from increased flexibility and lower costs.

1. eSIM is a downloadable digital SIM card that works like a physical SIM card, but without handling any hardware.
2. For travellers, eSIM offers fast activation, cheaper local plans, and the flexibility to change operators in seconds.
3. Before using eSIM for sensitive banking operations, verify that your bank accepts eSIM numbers in the country where you are.
